Redskins kick off season with a bang; knock off 5A Batesville SS 49-33

BATESVILLE – The Redskins traveled to Batesville Friday night where they defeated a very talented Southside Southerners squad 49-33 to start the season 1-0.

Marking their third consecutive year to play the 5A non-conference opponent, Pocahontas came in with a 28-8 loss to Southside in 2018 followed by a 42-18 win at home last season in the season opener.

Southside gained the early momentum Friday night after recovering their opening onside kick for good field position to start the game. They quickly realized, however, what was to come for them the rest of the night as they were held to no yards on the opening series. Taking possession midfield, Redskin senior quarterback Dawson Chester, on second down, hit senior Rob Mason on the pass route who broke the tackle and went 69 yards for the touchdown. Redskin junior kicker Ethan DeYoung tacked on the field goal to make it 7-0 Pocahontas with 9:37 remaining in the first.
