Lady Tigers head to state tournament
CALICO ROCK—The Maynard Lady Tiger basketball team earned a trip to the Arkansas 1A State Tournament with their 49-46 overtime win over ICC Thursday night in the first round of the regional tournament at Calico Rock.
The Lady Tigers went on to fall to Norfork, the number one ranked Class A team in the state who ultimately won the tournament, in the semi-final round 72-54 on Friday night before falling to Mammoth Spring 60-55 Saturday afternoon in the consolation game. The No. 4 seed Lady Tigers, now 22-15, traveled to ICC Tuesday afternoon to play the No. 1 seed Alpena Lady Leopards, 30-4, in the first round of the state tournament. With a win, they will play the winner between Mt. Vernon-Enola and Emerson Friday at 1:00 p.m.
Taking on Mammoth Spring in the regional tournament consolation game Saturday afternoon, Mammoth jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first quarter before a very high-scoring second quarter in which Mammoth edged out Maynard 23-21 for 37-24 lead at the half. The Lady Tigers picked up right where they left off to begin the second half, putting up 18 more points in the third while holding the Lady Bears to only nine to trail 46-42 heading to the fourth. Maynard would take a two-point lead with about three minutes left in the game but Mammoth Spring went on to outscore Maynard 14-13 overall in the fourth quarter, however, for the five-point victory. Sybell Howison led the Lady Tigers with 18 points and 13 rebounds while Bethany Dobbins added 17 points, five steals and three assists. Mikell Edington scored seven points with seven rebounds followed by Maddy Jones with six points, Emma Cline with five points, and Richelle Lhamon with two points.
