Junior `Skins suffer first loss at Westside
JONESBORO—The Junior Redskin football team picked up their first loss of the season Thursday night at Westside where the Junior Warrior defense was able to stave off the formidable Redskin offense to claim the 14-8 win.
The first half belonged mostly to Pocahontas, now 4-1 on the year, as they held an 8-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and an 8-6 lead at the half. Westside came alive in the second quarter and maintained possession for nearly the entire first six minutes with several first downs before finally making their way up to the 3 yard line. After a huge tackle by Pocahontas’ Karson James for a loss of one, Westside, on fourth-and-goal from the 4 yard line, ran it in for their first score of the night with 2:21 remaining in the half. Pocahontas, however, held them on the 2-point conversion to still lead 8-6.
The Junior Redskins shot back during the final two minutes with powerful first-down gains by running back Tripp Risley and quarterback Connor Baker to eventually make their way to the Westside 11 yard line with 17 seconds to go. The Junior Warrior defense was ultimately able to defend their end zone, though, and stop the Redskin drive to keep it 8-6 Pocahontas at the half.
