The Maynard Gang

One of the great enjoyments of writing this column is hearing from readers of the Star Herald from many states. Most are elderly and love to reminisce about a rapidly vanishing Randolph County culture. Many, like hill people everywhere, want to explore genealogies and lines of descent.

The passing of Jake Marlett of Wentzville, Missouri ended a correspondence that began soon after my first column. A Brakebill boy, Jake had an excellent memory, a keen sense of humor and a nostalgic reverence for his upbringing. He and his brother, Jack, attended school at Brakebill in the 1940s. My mother was their teacher as was D.L. Tucker.
