The Maynard Gang
The passing within days of each other of Paul and Shirley Smith Spencer at ages 96 and 92 mark the rapid demise of the generation that came of age before World War II.
Coming from McNairy County, Tennessee in the 1850s, the Spencers were early settlers of the Maynard-Middlebrook area. Paul’s father, Rufe, was a former Maynard mayor, merchant and landowner. Ethel, his mother, was the daughter of beloved Church of Christ preacher W.A. Goodwin.
Eric and Lillian Redwine Smith were Shirley’s parents. The Smiths and Redwines were also pre-Civil War Randolph County families, coming from Kentucky.
