The Maynard Gang

Knowing that I am a voracious reader and largely housebound, those who give me Christmas gifts often give me books. One of my 2018 favorites is a scholarly study of Ozark folk speech. It triggered a remembrance of the communications and the way of life of our Randolph County forbears.

Scholars are divided as to the influence of Elizabethan English speech on the Ozark dialect. Even though other influences were brought to bear as our ancestors trekked from the Atlantic Coast to the Arkansas hill country, there are multiplied examples of words, usages and expressions that were common to the writing of Shakespeare and Chaucer that were heard on store porches at Attica, Ingram, Middlebrook, Stokes and Maynard in my lifetime.
