The way people used to talk is a fertile field for study. Remembrance on this topic provides much humor but is also a cultural exploration of how our forbears thought, lived, and communicated. “Vittles” is an Upland South usage that was common in Shakespeare’s and Chaucer’s England. In their writings it was spelled “virtuals”. Most of our pioneer families originated in the British Isles.
