We will open this week’s literary effort with a recent Maynard Café exchange both amusing and profound. The rest of the column will be a recitation of the sayings of well known Randolph County characters.
In an effort to get those who had ever eaten a squirrel head to “come clean,” a question was elicited from Don Fowler. “Do you boil um or fry em?” His two ways kinsman, Ronnie Cox, was quick to pounce. Having accused Fowler of being a Yankee three years ago upon his admission of not having dined on hog jowl and black eyed peas on New Year’s Day, Cox charged that only a Yankee would have to ask. Jeff Spencer spoke for generations of Upland Southerners when he declared “mightnear anything is better fried.”
