Morning discussions at the Maynard Café are eclectic in their scope and awesomely intellectual in their depth. Such was the case recently by a line of inquiry proposed by Stokes patriarch Bryn Ulmer. In consultation with your humble scribe, Darrell Alphin, Faron Phillips and Jim Bob Jackson,
Bryn asked the meaning or derivation of a number of “old sayings” that were a part of the regular discourse of previous generations. If rural scholars such as those assembled do not record the sayings and their meanings, a very pertinent and colorful part of our culture will be lost.
