The subject of this week’s column is fraught with some peril. When writing about he isolation and lack of worldly knowledge of our Ozarks foothills people in previous generations, there is the risk of families or individuals taking offense if they think you are “throwing off” on their kindred. Be assured that is not my intent. I strive only to describe our forbears as they were. Besides, most of the families from which I descend were as “poor as Job’s turkey” and had very limited education.
Joe Barnett, known as Little Joe, to distinguish him from his father Uncle Joe Barnett, had a dry sense of humor and a droll way of talking that made his conversation very entertaining. He also had an excellent storehouse of knowledge on family history and genealogy.
