The Maynard Gang

This week’s column will be devoted to the sayings, quips, and observations of Randolph County characters in my time and in the memory of my father’s generation. Some have been quoted in previous columns, but I thought a compilation in one essay might be edifying or at least amusing. We will open with one of the Attica store’s premier philosophers. My mother’s bachelor half-brother, held forth on a daily basis on the porch in warm months and around the stove in winter. Highly opinionated, Uncle Rufe Elkins was given to vivid, colorful expression in the dialect of our previous generations. His pronunciation and word usages will, as with the other chosen sages, be represented as he actually spoke. The generation born from 1880
