This and That ...

Sunshine Week is observed each March to emphasize to the public about the importance of open government and the need for transparency when elected officials are spending taxpayer money.

Newspapers have always been the main source of information about what goes on in those public meetings as most people never attend the meetings.

Each legislative session there are always bills filed by legislators who seem to feel that many operations of public entities should be done in secret. Whether they are just following the suggestions of lobbyists and blindly sponsor their bills, or do not fully consider that openness is the best policy, each session we see the same attack on the Freedom of Information Act.

The Arkansas Press Association stays on top of bills filed, but in this political environment, it’s hard to keep track.
