Michael McRae Thompson
Grants Pass, Ore. - Michael McRae Thompson, 71, died peacefully August 17, 2018, at his home in Grants Pass, Ore. Mike was born on April 9, 1947, in Anderson, Ind., the only child of Dr. John and Louella Thompson. He graduated from St. Paul Catholic High School and attended Arkansas State University before deciding to join the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He graduated with honors from Chanute AFB, Ill., as a Jet Engine Mechanic and was assigned to Webb AFB, Big Spring, Texas. After his four years in the military, he moved his family to Phoenix, Ariz. and joined the City of Phoenix Police Department. He served in numerous units during his 30-year career in law enforcement: Patrol Bureau, Motorcycle Officer, Street Crimes, Burglary, a Field Training Officer, Auto Theft and the FBI Fugitive Task Force. He retired as Sergeant of Homicide Night Detectives. In 2005, he and his wife, Millie moved to Grants Pass, Ore., where he enjoyed his retirement doing all his favorite hobbies. He especially loved playing his guitar and singing for his family and friends. He also loved gardening and astronomy. Mike was quite the craftsman also and loved building toys for his grandsons. He loved living among nature and often referred to his home in the country as “living in God’s paradise on earth.” He was a man of few words but had a heart of gold for helping other people. A member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church, he volunteered weekly at the local St. Vincent de Paul Social Service office where he was past president of the local chapter. He is survived by his “high school sweetheart,” Millie (Thielemier) Thompson, three daughters, Ann Kristine (Mike) Prasser, Rebecca (Justin) Marr of San Diego, Calif., and Lisa (Clint) Houston of Phoenix; grandsons, Nolan and Hayden Houston (and new grandson due in October), Milo and Hudson Marr and step-grandsons, Kennedy and Christian Prasser. Visitation followed by a Rosary will be held Friday, August 31, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home. A Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 on Saturday, September 1, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Engelberg, Ark., with Rev. Mariadass Vallapaneni officiating.
