Elwanda Gray Gates

Elwanda Gray Gates, 94, of Delaplaine, passed away on January 6, 2017, at the Pocahontas Healthcare and Rehab Center. She was born on September 20, 1922, in Delaplaine, she was a Navy Veteran of World War II, a retired rural mail carrier and a member of the Delaplaine Church of Christ.

Survivors include one son, Fred Ray (Debbie) Gates of Pocahontas, one daughter, Alice Ann Cleveland of Delaplaine, two grandchildren, Justin Ray Gates of Pocahontas and Ginger (Shawn) Burgess of Delaplaine, two great-grandchildren, Garrett (Brittany) Burgess and Cally Burgess of Delaplaine and one great-great-grandson, Cason Burgess.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Mollie Gray, her husband Willard Ray Gates, two brothers, Tom Gray and C.R. Rooker and one sister, Opal Hall.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2017, at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Robert Davis officiating, burial followed in Jones Ridge Cemetery near Delaplaine. Visitation was held from 10:30 a.m. Monday until service time at the funeral home.

Pallbearers included: Terry Gray, Claude Rooker, Dr. Ron Hall, Jimmy Dale Rice, Frankie Rice, James Darrell Compton and Trey Hall.
