Quick response by local emergency crews averts a potential big disaster

Randolph County residents missed what could have been a grave disaster Tuesday afternoon, thanks to local emergency personnel who were able to quench a fire on a tanker truck loaded with 44,000 gallons of Ammonium Nitrate. The truck was located along Hwy. 67 North, 15 miles north of Pocahontas between Biggers and Reyno. Bo Graham of the Office of Emergency Management said the driver of the semi-truck made the E-911 call after attempts to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher failed. Graham said the driver stated the brakes locked and when he pulled over and checked out the situation the rear tires on the passenger side of the truck were on fire.
