Pocahontas City Council terminates Section 205 flood study
POCAHONTASFollowing a special meeting Tuesday afternoon at City Hall with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Pocahontas City Council approved a motion to terminate the CAP Section 205 Flood Study and seek instead to remedy the flooding issue locally.
In addition to the City Council aldermen, the meeting was also attended by members of the Randolph County Quorum Court, Randolph County Levee Board, and several area farmers and business people along with other concerned local citizens. Due to overall feasibility concerns raised by the Corps as well as a substantial increase in local funding needed for the study with no definitive guarantees, the Quorum Court voted Thursday night to terminate the County’s sponsorship in the study. Convening into their regular monthly City Council meeting shortly after the meeting with the Corps Tuesday, aldermen seemed to be in agreement with the County and too chose to terminate the study as it was not financially feasible. While no decisions were made as to the next step, the City and County are expected to work together with local engineers and may possibly combine their funding efforts into establishing an improvement district with an ultimate goal of providing relief to Black River.
