Officials break ground on Memorial Garden to honor fallen officers
POCAHONTAS—On Friday morning, April 5, a memorial garden groundbreaking ceremony was held on the north side of the Law Enforcement Training Academy (LETA) building at BRTC to honor those officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The officers honored Friday were George Griffin, Jonathan Schmidt, and Jake Harrellall of whom were BRTC LETA graduates.
According to a press release, the project resulted from discussions with LETA Class 2017B, regarding how to honor the LETA graduates as well as future sacrifices. The class decided to construct a brick memorial, which will also include flags in the garden-like setting, to serve as a focus for morning and afternoon formations and flag services.
The program began with the posting of the colors followed by the song “America the Beautiful”, performed by Rachel Koons and Zac DeClerk.
“I’d like to thank everyone for being here, especially the family members of those who are being honored,” said LETA Director Steve Shults in opening. “For a long time, we felt that we needed to do something to remember those that have come to this academy and given their lives in the service of others.”
