Former Razorback Sydney Moncrief visits Pocahontas in 1978

POCAHONTAS—At last Wednesday’s weekly Pocahontas Rotary Club meeting held at Beverly’s Catering, local Rotarians were treated to two very inspiring speeches given by former Arkansas Razorback basketball great Sydney Moncrief and Jonesboro Mayor and Arkansas Municipal League Vice President Harold Perrin.

Local Rotarian Hank McNabb introduced Moncrief, who was his special guest at the meeting.

“If you don’t know Sydney, you’re not from Arkansas or you hate basketball,” said McNabb in his introduction.

Moncrief, a five-time NBA All-Star, five-time member of the NBA All-Defensive team, two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, and an NBA All-Pro, was a key member of the Razorback basketball team from 1975 to 1979 in which he led the Hogs to a Final Four appearance in 1978. Following his retirement from the NBA in 1991 in which he played 10 seasons for the Milwaukee Bucks and one season for the Atlanta Hawks, he went on to be an assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors and the Bucks as well as coach at ULAR in Little Rock.
