The Good Stuff

The Hogs capped off a 9-4 season with a 24-10 win over Penn State at the Outback Bowl this past Saturday, putting an exclamation point on what was already a remarkable second season under Coach Sam Pittman. I’ve been upfront about my love affair with Pittman, and it’s probably wearing a bit thin to some, but allow me one more conversation to put the bow on this past run of football. The list of achievements for this squad is impressive. The Razorbacks won nine games in 2021-22, two more than their combined victory total in the previous three seasons. In beating Penn State, they won their first bowl game against a Big 10 opponent and won a bowl game in Florida for the first time since the historic 31-6 Orange Bowl upset of No. 2 Oklahoma after the 1977 season. The Hogs will also finish in the top 25 after entering the postseason ranked No. 21 in the College Football Playoff rankings, No. 22 in the Associated Press poll and No. 24 in the USA Today coach’s poll. Pretty heady stuff for a team a lot of folks considered a cellar-dweller in the SEC West division, and darned impressive for a head coach that very few thought was worthy of the posting at the time he was hired. After a day when the Razorbacks put up a gaudy 361-yard rushing effort against one of the Big 10’s better defenses, Pittman and Outback Bowl MVP KJ Jefferson met with members of the media, and Pittman described the potential momentum from the season.
