MIKE: I cut down an old tree up on the hill, so don’t think it’s a bear when you see it. ME: Why would I think it’s a bear? MIKE: Because you’re blind and you think everything you see from a distance is a bear.

Pat on the Back

My Granny Rosie would have my hide- I have failed her number one rule. What is that rule, ALWAYS (and she meant always) follow up with a handwritten thank you note. You see friends, there is something special about a good, old-fashioned thank-you note. These small yet personal touches are a fantastic way to show how much you care whether it’s for a loved one or for the chance to interview with a great employer. They sound simple . . . until it comes time to write them.

Blast from the past…1915

This 107-year-old photo not only depicts Pocahontas history, but also that of the First United Methodist Church in Pocahontas. This group of women represents one of the very first organized women’s groups in the First United Methodist Church at a meeting in 1915. The photo was furnished by Mrs. John C. (Berniece) Johnson of Pocahontas. Her mother, Mrs. G.D. Walters, is one of the ladies in the picture. In the photo are front row, from left, Mrs. Bill Waddle and Mrs. “Granny” Turner (who stands behind the two unidentified children at front), Mrs. G.D. Walters, Mrs. Nancy Jones, Mrs. Flora Black, the Methodist minister’s wife and baby, Mrs. Frasier and Mrs. George. Second row, from left, as faces appear, “Aunt” Sallie Dunn, Mrs. Camille Argo, Mrs. Crosby (with Mrs. Jessie Brown and Mrs. Mollie Dawson behind her), next two unidentified, (Mrs. Ina Shannon stands in front of Mrs. Dawson, and Mrs. Muta Haltom Turner stands beside Mrs. Shannon). The next woman behind Mrs. Turner is unidentified. Next is Mrs. Oscar (Delilah) Sallee, Mrs. Lena Armstrong, Mrs. Ira Magruder, Mrs. Katie Henderson, Mrs. Anne Martin, Mrs. J.D. Wells and daughters, Helen and Margaret, and Mrs. Jessie Phipps. It is thought that the photo was taken in front of one of the houses that once faced the church, on Thomasville (possibly the home of Mrs. Vida Throgmorton).

Here & There

Randolph County has numerous Arkansas firsts–sites and events that were the first occurrence of their type in what is or would become Arkansas. What are the reasons that this county was so important in the settlement and development of our state? What did we have that other counties didn’t?

Confessions of a Constitutionalist

I am at heart, a constitutionalist. Oh, I vote according to my conscience, but I always do my best to hold our politicians to the constitution our forefathers handed to us. Many of us might agree on that. However, I often wonder how many are somewhat fuzzy on the original formation of our government, what type it is and why it was chosen for us. It is no surprise this is the case, when even our own politicians and journalists get it wrong sometimes.

Life is a Journey

Maybe some of you watch Magnolia Network and are familiar with Ashely and Michael Cordray’s show Restoring Galveston? It is my very favorite show, they restore the old historic homes which are slated to be taken out and destroyed. A while back I was watching an episode and they bought a tiny old shotgun house in an alley, which is where some but not all shotgun houses are to be found. In New Orleans, they are pretty much anywhere and everywhere! But this shotgun they believed to have been built using salvaged materials from houses destroyed by a hurricane back in the twenties or thirties. Though it was bought for a song it had to be moved to another lot, which had proved to be quite the task. Where once more it had been given new life.
