I believe that nearly all of us shared a unique event here last week. I haven’t talked to anyone who didn’t watch at least part of the eclipse. We also shared the experience with people here from various continents– I heard of visitors here from Australia, Europe, and Asia along with Americans from many states..

Life is a Journey

On the last trip to Indiana, I visited Walnut Ridge Nursery and Garden Center in Jeffersonville, Indiana, a place our family has frequented for many years. There, I finally found some of the seeds I had been searching for. The Hyacinth Bean seeds, which used to grow on the back porch of our farm, reminded me of my mama’s patio covered in lattice on Tenth Street in Oklahoma City many years ago. I planted them about a week ago, and to my delight, they are now growing vigorously. Yesterday, I shared some of the seeds with Bobby, a gentleman from our church who seems to have a green thumb, hoping to have plenty of seeds come fall to share with others.

From the Humane Society

It only takes a brief walk across the yard and unless you take preventative measures, you may find an unwelcome “guest” on yourself that evening – the dreaded tick. If you have pets that spend a great deal of time outdoors in your yard, chances are even greater they will contract some sort of tick-borne or mosquito-borne illness or infection – unless you, the owner, take measures to prevent that from happening.

FROM THE SCRATCH WITH JEN JEN

For my husband and me, breakfast isn’t just a morning meal; it’s a meal we can indulge in three times a day without hesitation. There is satisfaction in a huge plate of biscuits and sausage gravy on the kitchen table. Even when our home was full of kids, announcing “breakfast for supper” brought all of them out of their rooms in a hurry. They would fight over how many biscuits each one got. With four teenagers at home, always having two or three cans of biscuits and an endless supply of eggs, along with all the necessary fixings, was a must in our house. But as all four kids have grown and flown the coop, I can’t help but breathe a sigh of relief at the thought of no longer facing that huge grocery bill every week.

It’s Tuesday morning. Last night I witnessed something extraordinary on TV—something I’ve never seen and probably will never see from anyone else again.

I was showing 2 gentleman hunting land one afternoon. One was an elderly man and was attempting to impart his vast knowledge of outdoorsy stuff on me. He was showing me things on the map, pointing out different trees and showing me which direction was what. He’d stop the Ranger every so often and ask me which way back to the truck and which was was North, etc. At one point, he pulled up to a stop and asked “Now, which way is west?” I pointed west and he said “Are you sure?” Having second thoughts by the tone of his voice, I thought for a minute and said “Yes, because it’s Never Enter Santa’s Workshop” pointing as I said it. It was at that point I was asked for my honorary man card back. I always knew 2nd grade geography would be my downfall...

The Maynard Gang

It has occurred to me that the signature sayings of our clan will be lost forever if I do not record them. By “clan” I mean kindred and other families closely associated with the Seawels, Condicts, Elkins, Hawks and other ancestral families through the generations.
