The Maynard Gang

A noteworthy difference between this and previous generations is how little quotes from the KIng James Bible permeates our discourse. Mild admonitions were often preceded by declaring “you know what the Good Book says.”

Life is a Journey

As you read this Christmas is over. Leaving us looking forward to the New Year of 2022. Guess you might say we had a blast in 2021 because it seemed like a vapor. On the thirty first of December, I have lived in Pocahontas nine years, making it six years for Red!

Way Back When

John P. Black, attorney at law, was said to have a keen perception, sound judgment, and a determined will. He had a thorough knowledge and administration of the law. Mr. Black was born at Black’s Ferry in Randolph County in 1822. He was the son of William and Elizabeth (Jones) Black, the grandson of David Black, and the great-grandson of David Black, a native of Amsterdam, Holland. The elder David Black came to America when a boy and learned the blacksmith trade. David Black, Jr. was a native of South Carolina, was a farmer, emigrated to Kentucky, and finally moved to Randolph County in 1815. John’s maternal grandfather was John Janes, a native of Virginia who settled on Jane’s Creek in the early 1800’s.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love all my gifts and they‘re certainly not the most important part of the season, but the reasoning behind this one has me puzzled. Is this a sort of coming of age standard gift for middle aged woman? Is it because I have one eyebrow and a mustache that put Poncho Villa’s to shame? Or is it because someone decided I needed a medieval torture kit just to pass the time at home? Whatever the reason, I’m not one to waste, so I decided to try that bad boy out. Sweet mother of all that is furry, what was I thinking?
