BABY CHICKS AND RABBITS ARE NOT EASTER GIFTS – A cautioning reminder from RCHS that bears repeating Over the next few weeks, many adults will be tempted to buy a live Easter rabbit, baby chick or duck for a child, godchild, grandchild, niece, or nephew. And a few months from now, our area animal shelters will be, as they are every year, inundated by a flood of cast-off bunnies, chicks and ducks.

The Maynard Gang

This week’s column is wide ranging. It ranges from the ancestry of Dr. William Jarrett to the education of Gary Hagood to the origin of Tattle Creek’s name. A flexible and eclectic frame of mind will be required to analyze and process the information.

Pat on the Back

I hate shrubs. They cause me stress. My church folks really don’t understand this but looking at shrubs causes me high blood pressure. I don’t know why- I just cannot deal with shrubbery or as I call it, “The Devil’s Plant.” Moving into a new parsonage, which is beautiful and appreciated, I have been forbidden to cut these unruly stress inducers. So, my stress level is thru the roof! Thank you, shrub lovers of America; I may have to start high blood pressure medicine.

Reading Bill Carroll’s column in last week’s paper put me in a nostalgic mood, I guess. Growing up in Pocahontas hand having lived so long (not that I’m old or anything). It made me look back over all the years and, of course, brought up many memories of people I have known, one of them being a favorite of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. It is our own Marie Davis who lived the be 108 years old. She was so much fun to be around to talk “old times” with. And she is just one of our town’s greatest treasures. I would like to share some of her recipes with you. She was a wonderful cook and everyone wanted one of the “Tamale Pies” she made by the dozens for the Methodist Church Bazaar every year. She always had a long list of people who put their orders in ahead of time, including my dad who ordered at least two.

The Good Stuff

After the opening weekend of college football, or Merry Football Christmas as I call it, my second favorite sporting time of the year is the opening weekend of March Madness. I’m able to watch multiple games at once in my man cave, and I love nothing more than a 4-day marathon of college basketball’s finest battling out to see which team can survive and advance to the Sweet 16. A big part of the fun for me is filling out my bracket after the participants have been picked and seeded on Selection Sunday, and I’d like to share my picks with y’all as the tournament progresses over the next few weeks. The Razorbacks got a tough draw by having to share the West Region with No. 1 overall seed Gonzaga. I’ve got the Hogs winning their first-round game over Vermont, along with Gonzaga, Memphis, New Mexico State, Alabama, Texas Tech, Davidson and Duke. From this region, I’ve picked the Hogs to advance to the Sweet 16, along with Gonzaga, Alabama, and Duke. My biggest question? Why in the world are the WEST regional games in Buffalo, NY? Last time I checked, Buffalo was in the eastern part of the United States.

Each week, I share all my fun, silly and sometimes questionable moments from the pervious week. I try really hard to be lighthearted and funny. This past week wasn’t my favorite week at all, it was a week full of nervousness and anxiety. Luckily, I think things are looking up.

Last night I finished eating before Mike. I put my plate in the dishwasher and left it open. I asked Mike to put his plate in it and close it when he was done. A little later in bed I heard something running. I asked if it was the dishwasher. He said “Yes, I ran it like you asked.” I said “There were 2 plates and 2 forks in it. Why did you run it?” He said “I’ve learned it’s much easier to just do what you ask instead of arguing the reasoning.” Aside from the fact I didn’t ask him to run it, I really like this mindset he has embraced..
