In spring, I count the days until it’s time to start looking for the return of hummingbirds (and orioles too) and for the first day of baseball season! In our area of the country, hummers usually start returning in late March or early April. It’s time to get the feeders and nectar ready. Don’t waste your money on commercial nectar mixes. Make your own inexpensively using one part sugar and four parts water. Never use things like Easter egg dye, fruit drink mix, or anything but water and white sugar. Clean the feeder often and regularly during spring and summer.

BRTC Foundation Board Members lead Workforce Industry Panel at BRTC

Black River Technical College Foundation (BRTCF) Board Members Graycen Bigger and Allison Hestand recently lead a workforce industry panel at BRTC during the college’s convocation week. The panel was held to keep faculty and staff up-to-date with the current state of the local workforce and the challenges and opportunities it is facing.

Black Rock Foothills Festival set for October 11 & 12

The Black Rock Foothills Festival will take place in downtown Black Rock October 10-11. Friday’s activities include go kart racing at Bobby Humes Memorial Speedway at 7 p.m., with the Black Rock Fire Department ham and bean supper at the school cafeteria from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday will consist of craft and food vendors, go kart racing, games, activities and live music by Fallen Within and Bloodline. Saturday morning will be the Lion’s Club Pancake Breakfast from 6 to 10 a.m. in the school cafeteria.

Daughters of American Revolution celebrate Constitution Week

To celebrate this Constitution Week, September 17 – 23, the Pocahontas Five Rivers Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution have set up displays about the Constitution at the Randolph County Library in Pocahontas and at the Lawrence County Library in Walnut Ridge. They encourage everyone to go to the library and to study the Constitution and reflect on the privilege of being an American with all the rights and responsibilities which that privilege involves.
