In the weeks following the holidays, people often post “need to rehome our pet” ads. (Unfortunately, many times rehoming without knowing the background of the recipient, often with nightmarish results.) Or depend on groups like RCHS, FoPAC and FRAA to “take” their pet(s). Why? Bottom line: Impulse acquisition for Christmas. Not nearly enough thought was given to the family dynamic, general consequences, time requirements, and veterinary needs. OR they have discovered someone in the family is allergic. OR their elderly parent is not able to care for it. OR it supposedly can’t be housebroken. OR they are moving. OR their 5-year-old isn’t feeding/walking/caring for the pet like he/she promised? And you’re surprised?! How about being a model of responsibility for that child? OR blah, blah, blah. Granted, there will be some folks with legitimate excuses. An owner going into the nursing home, dying or becoming critically ill are excuses that might be acceptable, but more often than not it comes down to an impulse gift without any thought to the animal’s future. Certainly, this does not include animals that are indiscriminately dumped. A different scenario completely. And God bless those people who don’t whine about it; instead they just deal with it, starting with spaying or neutering! For those who think it’s an animal welfare group’s JOB to take your pet, take a wild guess at how much their volunteers’ SALARIES are! By the way, when was the last time you made a donation?
