Armed Forces Day, observed on the third Saturday in May, is a special occasion to honor the brave men and women currently serving in the five branches of the U.S. military, as well as the National Guard and Reserve units. The day was established on August 31, 1949, thanks to the efforts of President Harry S. Truman. It was created to provide a unified opportunity for Americans to express their gratitude to the military members for their selfless service to the nation. The establishment of Armed Forces Day followed the unification of the armed forces under the U.S. Department of Defense.

NEA Responders unite for disaster drill

On Tuesday, May 2, local emergency responders from Northeast Arkansas joined forces in a regional disaster drill organized by the Northeast Arkansas Readiness and Response. This collaborative effort involved medical facilities, nursing homes, clinics and various emergency service agencies coming together to enhance their preparedness and response capabilities in the event of a largescale incident. The drill, which took place at the Randolph County Fairgrounds, was meticulously coordinated with St. Bernards Five Rivers Medical Center. Its primary objective was to simulate a scenario involving mass casualties, decontamination proce- dures and triage for mock patients with simulated injuries. By participating in such emergency drills, the local emergency services gain valuable insights into areas that require improvement and identify opportunities for better coordination and support across the region.
