A mere 296 out of the approximately 3,500 registered voters in the City of Pocahontas exercised their civic duty during a special election held on Aug. 8. Despite the underwhelming voter participation, the city’s residents have given a green light to two pivotal measures, with a slim margin of victory, for the improvements the city has planned.

Steve Jones from Imboden recently retired from the Imboden Volunteer Fire Department after 50 years of service as a firefighter and 40 years as an Emergency Medical Technician. He served as Assistant Chief of the Imboden Volunteer Fire Department for 26 years, interim chief of the Pocahontas Fire Department and Fire Marshall for the Imboden, Walnut Ridge and Pocahontas Fire Departments.
A Randolph County Deputy sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized following a chase near the Stokes community on Monday, Aug. 7. The incident unfolded after law enforcement responded to a domestic violence call, culminating in an armed confrontation with a suspect.
The Pocahontas City Council convened on Tuesday, Aug. 8, with a full complement of members present, including City Attorney Joe Grider, City Clerk Michelle Teel and Mayor Keith Sutton. The council’s discussions touched on a range of topics, from financial matters to community involvement in local events.
