This old photo was taken of the little-known Pocahontas merchant Fred C. Kline (1874-1906), whose family were German settlers in the area. He is pictured outside his store, located on the court square where the old Futrell Hardware is today. He drowned on May 25, 1906, when a gasoline tank exploded on a boat with H. O. McKinney, R. L. Stackhouse and J. W. Presley. The body was found three days later. The Star Herald has in its possession a journal of Mr. Kline’s, detailing much of his merchant activity and some events happening around the town during his life. The book itself is so brittle and delicate that it can’t be opened
