BRTC warded $1.8 million grant from DOE

Black River Technical College (BRTC) was recently awarded roughly $1.8 million through the Department of Education (DOE) under the Strengthening Institutions Grant Program. The grant spans five years and will fund a project entitled, “Building the Workforce: Implementing a Career Services Program and Durable Skills Curriculum.” Through this project, BRTC will establish a comprehensive Career Services Program which will include hiring a full-time Director of Student Workforce Readiness.

Library hosts fun at Pocahontas Community’s Trunk or Treat

The Randolph County Library (RCL) is thrilled to join the festivities at the Pocahontas community’s Trunk or Treat celebration this Halloween on Oct. 31, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the Square will convert into a Halloween wonderland, brimming with decorations, candy and family-friendly activities.

Dental team gains insights at ADA Convention in Orlando

Dr. Pat Carroll, with hygienist Keri Ingram, Andrea Burrow, recently attended the annual convention of the American Dental Association. This year the 4-day meeting was in Orlando, Florida, where they enjoyed the opening session presentation by actress Constance Wu, known for her staring rolls in the TV series Fresh Off the Boat and the movie Crazy Rich Asians. Wu says she doesn’t care for the Hollywood life, so she’s now concentrating on the theatre. She’s currently staring off Broadway in Little Shop of Horrors.

In honor of St. Francis of Assisi, patron of animals, humane societies and other animal-related organizations sponsor an annual blessing of pets. Overall, the event began in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence, Italy who wished to highlight the plight of endangered species. Since then, it has become a worldwide observance held by many faiths and secular groups as well. St. Francis is also patron saint of ecology and was the first person to arrange a living Nativity scene as a teaching tool.

Randolph County has numerous Arkansas firsts– sites and events that were the first occurrence of their type in what is or would become Arkansas. What are the reasons that this county was so important in the settlement and development of our state? What did we have that other counties didn’t? As we’ve discussed before, it’s estimated that 80% of Arkansas’s early settlers entered the state at Hix (later Pitman’s) Ferry on the Current River in extreme NE Randolph County. They entered Arkansas by traveling along the Old Military Road–the first federally improved road in the state.

TOLM Group selected for theArkansas Game and Fish project

The TOLM Group is proud to announce its partnership with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to modernize the Joe Hogan State Fish Hatchery in Lonoke. The engineering and design services were provided by ETC Architects and Engineers. TOLM is excited to be a part of enhancing this facility’s ability to supply millions of fish for the state’s public lakes and streams. This $12.6 million project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

PHS Class of 1973 celebrates 50th

Members of the PHS Class of 1973 gathered for their 50th reunion last weekend, reliving memories and rekindling friendships. The reunion weekend was filled with activities, including a tour of their alma mater, shared meals at various local eateries and ended with a heartwarming gathering at the Rolling Hills Country Club.

Thanksgiving is going to be here very soon so let’s get started on recipes you may want to make for the big day. I thought we would start with some pumpkin dishes. Everywhere I go it seems like there are pumpkins everywhere. So along with the old fashioned pie we will try some different recipes. In our next few columns we will have some meats and side dishes also. so be sure and save any of these you want to use so you can plan on and start buying all the ingredients ahead of time.
