Just a short distance from the city limits of Pocahontas on Highway 90, Derek and Cheyenne Kildow have planted a new holiday tradition. Their Cornerstone Christmas Tree Farm, settled on the family’s land, has swiftly become the hub of festive cheer, attracting families from near and far to select their perfect Christmas tree, shop at the cottage on the property and make lasting holiday memories.

The VFW Auxiliary, includes men as well. On Apr. 21, 2015, the National Headquarters of the VFW Auxiliary officially changed the name of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary to the Auxiliary. The change acknowledges that women have served in the military, enabling their family members to join the auxiliary. Additionally, any non-combat veteran can join the auxiliary to support the organization.

Recently in Marked Tree, an unidentified person left a litter of seven puppies in a sealed box in a cemetery. This individual had apparently committed the same crime when his or her unspayed dog had another litter, which received the same “care” back in the spring. The puppies were dehydrated, malnourished, and bloated – their bellies were full of worms. Animal abandonment is a crime in Arkansas, and Marked Tree Animal Rescue is offering a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
The sayings and expressions of our family and extended clan are deemed worthy of a second column. By use of the word clan I mean families of little or no “blood kin” but who have interacted with the Seawels, Condicts and Elkins for many generations.
Fall is a favorite time for many. The gorgeous days of autumn are some of our best times spent outdoors. The weather is still mild, usually sunny. The leaves are mostly turned, yet you can still see spectacular or delicate color combinations without searching too hard.
Mike was talking about his boat and mentioned using a power pole for shallow water and an anchor for deep water. I asked what his anchor was. He said “An anchor.” Duh, I know what it’s used for but what is it made from. My dad had a concrete block or a coffee can full of lead, etc. Wanted to know what he used for his. He said “It’s an anchor. You buy them in stores.” Oh well, Mr Fancy. Maybe I’ll look one up after my dinner with the King. Store bought anchor? Geeze… After a hectic day, I find sitting on the sofa curled up with a warm beverage, with all the lights off except for the twinkling Christmas tree, has a calming effect on me. I would practice this technique throughout the day after a stressful situation but I’m not sure how my clients would react finding me sitting in the dark in their homes... Cocoa anyone?
