PHS football players greet M.D. Williams students to spread Redskin spirit

A crowd filled the Pocahontas Community Center on Tuesday, Oct. 14, as city residents and officials gathered for what turned into a four-hour city council meeting that revolved largely around a single topic, the repeal of Ordinance 2024-19. The measure, a code enforcement ordinance passed a year ago, had become a hot topic for criticism among citizens who said its language was too broad and its enforcement unclear.

This past week has been one long test of endurance; not mental, not emotional but purely physical. And by physical, I mean the kind that involves sitting. Hours and hours of sitting. I’m not sure what I’ve done to deserve this particular brand of torture, but I have spent more time this week on bleachers and wooden pews that should’ve been outlawed.

Sandra “Sandy” Kay Brickell, age 79, passed away on October 13, 2025, at Mercy Hospital Southeast in Cape Girardeau, MO. She was born on September 11, 1946, in Pocahontas, AR to the late William Henry ‘Jack’ and Merel Sago Waymon. In June of 1989 she married Danny Brickell who still survives of the home in Benton, MO. For many years Danny and Sandy owned and operated Bootheel Diesel Fuel Injection until their retirement in 2014. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, J.W. (Kim) Hackworth of Jackson, MO, John Hackworth of Sikeston, MO and Brian Brickell of Hollister, MO; one daughter, Beth (Travis) Smith of Sikeston, MO, one sister, Mary Cullison of Pocahontas, AR and five grandchildren, Baden Hackworth, Baylee Hackworth, Madison (Sumner) Smith Barnes, Mason Smith and Drew Brickell and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Monday October 20, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Forest Hills Cemetery in Morley, MO with Danny Kuykendall, officiating the service. Pallbearers will be Baden Hackworth, Mason Smith, Chad Cullison, Travis Smith and Sumner Barnes. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to American Heart Association, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692 or American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116-7023. The Randolph County Library will be having a board meeting on Monday, October 27, at 5:00pm. The meeting is open to the public.

Mike came in from the woods and said that the deer were eating 50 pounds of corn a night then last week they didn’t eat 50 pounds in a week. I asked what happened. He said “The acorns hit the ground. It’s like if the feeder was full Banquet Fried Chicken and someone scattered a bunch of ribeyes on the ground.” I like that he can relate to how I think… Was watching Flea Market Flip and this dealer said he’d let them have the dresser for $100 and 3 hugs. Mike said “Well, that’s just a low level of prostitution.” I feel maybe I need to limit his “Cop’s” tv time...
On October 17, the Arkansas State Police Highway Safety Office launched the statewide distracted driving campaign, “Put the Phone Away or Pay.” The high-visibility enforcement campaign, running from October 19–25, will remind drivers of the deadly dangers and legal consequences of distracted driving.
