As we move through the 2025 legislative session, the Arkansas House of Representatives has passed several important bills that will impact our communities, focusing on education, healthcare, and food security. Here’s a summary of the key measures approved during the fifth week of the session: SB59: An Act to Provide Each Public School Student with Breakfast at No Cost This bill ensures that every student in Arkansas public schools will be entitled to one free breakfast per school day, regardless of their eligibility for federally funded meals. Funded through medical marijuana tax revenue, the bill was passed with the goal of addressing food insecurity among students. Arkansas ranked as the hungriest state in the nation in 2023 with 18.9% of households experiencing food insecurity.

Several Pocahontas Redskin art students walked away with awards at the Visual and Performing Arts Festival on Feb. 16. Akira Harris, Olivia Toney and Lexi Kidd delivered stellar solo performances, showcasing their passion for the arts. Ellie Eddington won the Show Stopper Award for hand textures, while Addison Shipley brought home the Best of Show Award for texture still life. The other artists that participated were Claudia Russ, Lexi Tweedy, Cambree Russ, Addyson Forrester, Lilly Burgess and Amelia McKenzie.

Maynard Elementary School has launched its new book vending machine, offering students a unique way to be rewarded for their achievements.

The Pocahontas School District Board of Education held its regular meeting on Feb. 17 in the PJHS cafeteria, addressing financial, personnel and infrastructure matters.

The second seeded Pocahontas Jr. Lady Redskins dropped a 28-18 decision to the third seeded Brookland Jr Lady Bearcats in the 4A - 3 Jr Girls District Tournament at Westside, Thursday, Feb. 13.

The Maynard Jr. Lady Tigers won the 1A - 3 District Tournament defeating Hillcrest and completing the season at 28-3 and going a perfect 14-0 in conference play.
