Just Jana

with Jana Caldwell I’m standing in the pool watching Mike in the backyard. He has the tractor bucket holding up a tree branch. He’s standing on the mule with one of those weed eaters with a chain saw attachment. He cuts the limb and it clamps down on the blade and gets stuck. I’m quietly watching him trying different angles and maneuvers to free it. He ties ropes to several pieces and points and says “I may need your help.” I told him okay but I’d need to get dressed before I can help him. He looks at me confused. I said “I don’t mind helping but I can’t take you to the hospital in just my swimsuit…” I’ve always had a pool/river bag I carry to the water. In my teenage years it was Hawaiian Tropic oil, Sun-in hair spritz, sunglasses, bubblegum lip gloss, etc. Yesterday I was looking through the one I currently use. It’s sunglass readers, SPF 5000 sunscreens, Rolaids, Nexium, lip protection, etc. My, how times change… We were watching a cooking show where they were using nettles, aka stinging weeds. One of the chefs said that she “Really understood the integrity of nettles.” I don’t think you can really understand “the integrity of nettles” until you’ve squatted in them, in 100 degree July weather, on the banks of Eleven Point River, while your dad waits in the boat yelling, “It will feel better when it quits hurting!” Amateurs.
