One of my favorite amusements is to dumbfound and sometimes annoy my grandchildren and my sister’s grandchildren with words and sayings of past generations that are totally foreign to their technologized world. “Don’t take any wooden nickels.” “You can hear anything but the money a rattlin and the meat a fryin.” Reflecting on a long lifetime of hearing amusing and/or profound Randolph County utterances, I have decided to offer a few for the edification of Star Herald readers.

MICHAEL RICHARD ”RICKY” WELLS

Michael Richard “Ricky” Wells, 76, of Pocahontas, formerly of Jonesboro passed away Friday, August 16, 2024 at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House. Ricky was born February 17, 1948 to Elmer Richard and Cona Jean Wells in Randolph Couty. Ricky was a master electrician and later returned to school and became an LPN. He was an amateur photographer, loved the outdoors, enjoyed watching westerns, and was a golf enthusiast. He was of the Jehovah’s Witness faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jenia Wells; and his parents, Elmer Richard Wells and Cona Jean

Arkansas House

Recently, the Arkansas State Police (ASP) issued a reminder for parents to remain vigilant in recognizing and preventing online predators from targeting children. This summer alone, ASP has issued several Missing/ Endangered Advisories for missing children and teens, including five Amber Alerts since May. Disturbingly, multiple Arkansas teens have been lured away by predators they encountered through online messaging apps.

Arkansas National Guard signs MOU recruitment agreement with BRTC

On Monday, Aug. 12, Black River Technical College (BRTC) hosted a visit from the Arkansas Army National Guard in order to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Arkansas National Guard. This was done in an agreement for the college to recognize national guard credentials as college credit, to share their curricula and pool resources to increase recruitment of young men and women for local national guard forces.

Oaklawn President announces $500,000 donation to Razorback Foundation

Calling it an example of one great Arkansas sports institution lending a hand to another, President Louis Cella announced today that Oaklawn has made a $500,000 contribution to the Razorback Foundation at the University of Arkansas. In addition, he is asking for other Arkansas businesses to consider also making a contribution to support the Razorbacks.
