Growing up in Pocahontas, the names and stories in the Pocahontas Star Herald became ingrained in my memory, almost like characters in a beloved weekly television show or a classic novel. Ann Carroll’s detailed and entertaining columns often featured her family, including her baby sister, Mary Blankenship Williams, who was also a twin. Known affectionately as Aunt Mary, she lived a rich and varied life, passing away just weeks short of her 100th birthday.

Growing up, my mother would always cook a big meal for after church on Sunday. Whether it was pot roast, fried chicken or my dad’s favorite homemade cheeseburgers. Family meals were a huge part of my upbringing. Still, 40-plus years later she cooks huge family meals with all of us at one table, it is something my parents love--having us all there at the same table.
Growing up, I always looked forward to the end of the schoolyear. I spent many summers playing church league baseball and as I got older, I found opportunities to use this time to make a difference in the lives of others by teaching kids to swim. It was a rewarding experience. I’ve met with many young Arkansans who use summer break to explore new interests and gain public service experience to help put them on a path to a meaningful and purpose-driven future.
