Lots of exciting things have been happening around us lately, but selfishly, I am most excited about the release of our summer edition of Arkansas Crossroads! Being our fourth edition since its creation, my office buddy Jenny and I almost single- handedly wrote, designed and brought this issue to life.

With their three daughters and other family members, they have been managing their poultry farm since 2016. Eddie Mae Herron Center: C.C. Scott Mural

ONIN Staffing is a local business that began over eight years ago and assists in creating opportunities and empowering people to reach their goals through job placement and other services. ONIN has a SEEDS initiative for recognizing non-profit organizations throughout the year with a major focus in June. ONIN has recognized the Eddie Mae Herron Center (EMHC) for the second year in a row with a $500 donation for their Juneteenth Celebration and the efforts to improve community involvement.

Local planning for rural community health in Randolph County

A Community Priority Action Planning Workshop was recently held in Pocahontas on June 27 by the National Rural Health Resource Center’s Delta Region Community Health Systems Development (DRCHSD) Program staff in collaboration with St. Bernards Five Rivers Medical Center. Nurses, administrators, emergency responders and many others from all different aspects of the local health community attended. The workshop was purposed to review health outcomes; present questionnaire results to understand community members’ and partners’ health concerns and priorities, establish a community priority plan and prioritize where to begin to develop an action plan, primarily focusing on health needs in the Randolph County rural communities.

Blair Baxley: Leading the Charge for Arkansas Rice

Pocahontas High School senior Blair Baxley is an ambitious young woman on a mission. As the youngest child in her family with an older brother, Rhet, who recently graduated from the University of Arkansas with a bachelor’s degree in Crop Science, Blair is following in some impressive footsteps. Her father, Ron, works as an independent crop consultant and her mother, Deshea, is a dental hygienist. This strong family background has significantly influenced Blair’s path, particularly her interest in agriculture.
