The Maynard Gang

Many of the words, phrases, and sayings common in my youth would be largely incomprehensible to young people today. The reasons for this transition are readily understandable. Until World War II our Upland South Randolph County culture had changed very little since the days of earliest settlement. Most of our founding families trekked westward from Virginia and the Carolinas, perhaps passing a generation in Tennessee or Kentucky. Entering our homeland at Pitman’s Ferry across Current River they replicated the Upland South culture of their previous generations.

Just Jana

I was driving to a showing yesterday and my phone rang with a number I didn’t recognize. It was hands free, a little hard to hear and the lady was talking fast. I didn’t hear her name but she started telling me she had someone there with her and they had an accident. I was just catching bits and pieces but in my head, Mike had been in an accident and the nurse was calling me. Then she proceeded to ask me if I could bring a change of underwear and pants to her. I’m thinking “Yes, sure I can see if he was in an accident needing that.” My head was spinning at this point. I said “This is Jana Caldwell. Is Mike ok?” She then announced loudly “THIS ISANNAT KIDS SPOT. YOUR SON HAS WET HIMSELF.” It was at this point we figured out she had dialed the wrong number… I played with 2 babies, 3 dogs and a cat today during my real estate endeavors. I call that a win in any profession.
