Around the Kitchen Table with Nanny

The Fourth of July is just around the corner and that means cookouts, family gatherings, picnics, river and lake parties and the main event, fireworks! We will all be celebrating……and grilling! This week I share some family favorites and a special recipe for ribs from our son-in-law, Doug. He takes great care in preparing the ribs before they hit the grill and I can almost guarantee them to be delectable! Add to the menu potato salad or cole slaw or the grilled corn described below and you’ve got a memorable summer holiday feast! Sometime during the day, we should all take a moment to appreciate the meaning of this holiday that commemorates the founding of this great nation and the signing of our Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Hot take: Freedom of speech is a God-given right. For decades, this would have been something no one even really looked at or questioned. However, today, in much of the US, many Americans are questioning this idea. Firstly, an unprecedented number of people claim no form of God exists. As more and more people move away from organized religion in general, this idea does come into question. However, our founding fathers not only believed in God, they wrote our governing laws from that perspective. Secondly, there are many arguments over what the term “freedom of speech” really means. The Supreme Court has handled many cases over the years and will likely continue to do so as long as the US exists. There are always some who want to speak their minds, regardless of the cost or circumstances. So what does freedom of speech actually mean and how do we protect that right if necessary?

Life is a Journey

Our Memories of Kilo Vista Days Part 2 The first weekend would be spent cleaning the cabin from top to bottom. Dusting ceilings and walls of cobwebs, washing everything down, shaking rugs, sweeping and mopping. Cleaning cabinets, striping all bed linens to wash, taking down curtains and washing windows, running the vacuum. Till it passed specs and smelled squeaky clean and fresh, then we put it all back together. Times spent here were just like the Eleven Point River, they just kept rolling along.
