The last weekend in February, we met up at a friend’s house, and then we were off to Hardy for lunch. David drove, with Red up front riding shotgun. Pam and I were happy in the back seat; I could actually do some sightseeing. Red never drives, and people always ask why. It is simple; he doesn’t like to drive! He always says he would rather be scared. By the time we got there, the crowd had cleared out a bit at Bob and Sandy’s, so there was hardly a wait. Their BBQ is excellent, and their baked beans are absolutely the best - my personal favorite. Their plates are huge, and we always have leftovers. I love the beautiful views from up there of all the hills roundabout. Of course, it is always neat when a train comes rumbling through, blowing its whistle loud and long.
So, in my past columns I may have mentioned my disdain for shrubbery. That has not changed. But today’s column is about my soul. I’ve struggled lately. Planning for Easter, loving my church members, writing sermons, attending youth events, and casting visions- it can suck the life out of you. I learned a long time ago that you have to take care of you before you can take care of others. Working out in my yard used to be my soul care. I started water-color painting and making cards and it does provide some what of an escape but my trip to Poland and Amsterdam are going to be life giving to me. Yes, I will come home tired but full of life! Think about… Traveling inspires everyone, it is one thing that is on almost everybody’s bucket list. It is always in the trend to visit new places and take infinite pictures that are social-media worthy. But the point of it is not to show off. The real reason to discover new cities and countries is that traveling is good for the soul.
Being female, I love learning about accomplishments made by women. It might surprise some readers to learn that, while suffrage was truly a pivotal point for women in this country, it was not the only organized, political event that occurred on the path to the world we live in today. The people who left England behind were trailblazers. They were determined to enjoy a life of freedom and were not afraid to carve that life out for themselves. However, they also still loved their tea.
