First Day Hike tour at Powhatan

Powhatan Historic State Park will host a First Day Hike tour of the historic town on Sunday, Jan. 1, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., starting at the 1888 Powhatan Courthouse. Participants will learn about the history of photography and the story of Powhatan through pictures before taking the tour of the town.

Powhatan hosts drinks workshop

Powhatan Historic State Park will host a Historic Drinks Workshop on Saturday, Dec. 31, from 9 a.m. to noon at the 1888 Powhatan Courthouse. Participants will make and sample historic drinks, including the 19th-century equivalent of today’s sports drinks and spiced hot chocolate.

The history of Sloan-Hendrix

Why is the school in Imboden called Sloan-Hendrix? In 1891, the board of trustees of Hendrix College in Conway recommended, in part to help provide for an educated clergy, a plan to build affiliated academies. The recommendation was adopted unanimously, and five academies were organized, the second being Sloan-Hendrix Academy in Imboden.

Kiwanis give to Bridge of Hope

Kiwanis Member, Clarence Ungerank, presents a donation from the Pocahontas Kiwanis Club to Bridge of Hope Ministries Board Member, Mark Holt. Mr. Holt was the guest speaker at the Pocahontas Kiwanis Club meeting; he talked about the mission, ministry, and the Bridge of Hope home.
