SHHS Basketball

The Sloan Hendrix Lady Greyhounds started the week with a 5338 loss to the Westside Lady Warriors in the Williams Baptist University annual basketball tournament held at the Southerland-Mabee Center on the campus of Williams Baptist University. Sloan-Hendrix trailed by 8 points at the half, 36-28. Westside outscored Sloan Hendrix in the last half 17-10 to win the game 53-38. Makayla Gosha led the Greyhounds in scoring with 20 points, followed by Carley Morgan and Katelyn Graddy with 7 points each, and Cadee Johnson and Abby Geoffrion with 2 points each.

PSD Christmas break schedule

Pocahontas Public Schools will be closed for the Christmas Holiday, Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022 through Friday, Dec. 30, 2022. The district will conduct its regular schedule on Friday, Dec. 30. Pocahontas Public Schools will resume class on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023.

First Day Hike tour at Powhatan

Powhatan Historic State Park will host a First Day Hike tour of the historic town on Sunday, Jan. 1, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., starting at the 1888 Powhatan Courthouse. Participants will learn about the history of photography and the story of Powhatan through pictures before taking the tour of the town.

Busload of Books Tour to visit RC

Maynard Elementary School has been awarded a stop on the Nationwide Busload of Books Tour launched by children’s author/illustrator duo Matthew Swanson and Robbi Behr. The couple are crisscrossing the United States in a school bushome with their four children for the 2022-2023 school year.

Powhatan hosts drinks workshop

Powhatan Historic State Park will host a Historic Drinks Workshop on Saturday, Dec. 31, from 9 a.m. to noon at the 1888 Powhatan Courthouse. Participants will make and sample historic drinks, including the 19th-century equivalent of today’s sports drinks and spiced hot chocolate.

Lucy Hulvey

Lucy Leah Hulvey, 83, left this earthly life Monday morning, November 28, 2022 at Alpine Fireside Nursing Home in Rockford, Illinois. Lucy was born March 29, 1939 to James Denton and Lucile Celeste Hulvey in Pocahontas, AR. Lucy graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1956, then moved to Rockford, Illinois. She spent the majority of her work life working for Illinois Bell/ AT&T.

Michael Davis

Michael Dewayne Davis, 49, of Pocahontas, Arkansas passed away on November 14, 2022 at his home. He was born on August 17, 1973 in Pocahontas, Arkansas to Charles and Etta Shocklee Davis. Michael enjoyed arrowhead hunting, looking for unusual rocks, playing and working on guitars, eating out and trying new restaurants, collecting guns, and spending time with his family. The family would like to give a special thanks to all of the nurses at Legacy Hospice.
