Eugene V. Jones was born on a hill farm around Smithville on October 9, 1922. His first education was in a one room schoolhouse between Smithville and Denton. Later he commuted to Imboden where he graduated from Sloan-Hendrix in 1942. In January of 1943 he was drafted in the United States Army Air Force and completed basic training at Shepherd Field in San Antonio, Texas. After basic training he attended schools in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. Eugene was then sent to the Airplane Armament School at Lowrey Field, Denver, Colorado. Upon graduation from the 9-week school he was awarded a MOS as armorer gunner/ airplane armorer. Job Description for that MOS included periodically examining aerial machine guns, gun mounts, and gun turrets, for cleanliness and proper functioning; installing armament and equipment and checking their completeness prior to missions; remove and replace aircraft armament to be serviced or repaired; and inspect, disassemble, clean, repair, assemble, and make parts replacements to .50-caliber machine guns Between that assignment and his next assignment, he came home on leave to marry Willene Stewart on October 16, 1943. He was then assigned to the 19th Combat Crew Training School at Pyote Airfield, Pyote, Texas as a ball turret gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress Heavy Bomber. The ball turret was made of Plexiglas, about four feet in diameter, and attached to the bottom of the B-17. It was armed with two. 50-caliber machine guns capable of rotating 360 degrees. Turret gunner was responsible for protecting the otherwise-exposed underbelly of the flying fortress against enemy aircraft.
