… at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month

Friday November 11 is Veterans Day. Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served in the United States Armed Services. For one day, we stand united in respect to our veterans. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. On the first anniversary of the armistice of World War I, November 11, 1919, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson declared that November 11 would be celebrated as Armistice Day with parades, public meetings and a two-minute pause of business at 11:00 a.m. This holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country’s service and was originally called Armistice Day. The original bill was amended by Congress in 1954 for a celebration of all veterans, not just those who died in country’s service, and changed the name replacing “Armistice” with “Veterans,” and it has been known as Veterans Day since.
