The Good Stuff

The Pocahontas Redskins held off the Blytheville Chickasaws this past Friday night, with Redskin quarterback Connor Baker racking up 389 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 41 carries in the victory. The Redskins travel to Highland this week for the regular season finale, with Baker just four rushing touchdowns shy of breaking the state record set by Clarendon’s Cedric Houston.

Here & There

Streets and roads–we all live on one or just off one. So how did they get their names? I’ve done a little research and found the origin of some of those local street names. Some are named for other towns or old settlements. Our main thoroughfare here in Pocahontas is Thomasville Avenue. It was named for the community of Thomasville, Mo. It originally connected to the north to that old town. I’m told its many twists and turns exist because people in the north of the County used to drive their cattle into town, and the beasts took the easiest route following the lay of the land.

I shared pieces of this story with all my friends on Facebook, but I decided to save the best parts for you. My child, calm and reserved, was invited to her first party with her new friends who attend her new school. I, usually the helicopter dad, didn’t ask many questions. I didn’t even know where the party was taking place until a few hours before it was to start.

Franklin Joseph Coffman

Franklin Joseph Coffman, 39, of Independence, KY. formerly of Maynard, AR. passed away October 6, 2022 in Kentucky. He was born in Bad Hersfeld Germany to Franklin Mark and Dawn Lance Coffman on August 3, 1983. Frank had a special bond with his grandfather Bill. He had an athletic childhood and loved swimming and sports. Frank was brought up in a military family who moved a lot, but he always made lots of friends. Frank served in the army from 2002-2006. He was avid Arkansas Razorback football fan. Frank and his wife Sheisla lived in Maynard from 2005 – 2020 where they then re located to Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bill and Celia Tatum; and son, Franklin Scott. Franklin is survived by his parents, Franklin Mark and Dawn Lance Coffman; wife, Sheisla Coffman; children, Maria and Benjamin Coffman; siblings, Charles “Andy” (April) Coffman, Brook (Mike) Bernhardt; nieces, Isabella, Charlie, Sophia, and Penelope Coffman of Maynard AR.; nephews, Gabriel and Asher Abrams of Atlanta GA.; and many other family and friends.
