BRTC CTC Program Hosts Josh Rutter
The BRTC Career and Technical Center hosted guest speaker Josh Rutter with Carter Realty in Pocahontas. Rutter is a realtor and spoke with students at BRTC Pocahontas about the process of buying a house and/or land and how good credit is a very important part of that process. From the Humane Society….
November is Adopta- Senior Pet Month. If your family is considering adopting a new furry family member, please consider a “senior” dog or cat. They are laid-back and loving, and will love you for taking them in. ****** Seasonal cooler weather is upon us. Very young or very old pets should never be kept outdoors. However, if you absolutely cannot bring them indoors, please make sure they have a warm place with plenty of fresh bedding in a shed or garage. Pets need more food during cooler weather to help maintain their body heat. And don’t forget fresh water daily! ****** REMINDER: If you have pets that are approaching sexual maturity – usually around six months old – please remember that neither Pocahontas nor the county needs any more unwanted pets! If you qualify, the local humane society will help you pay to get that pet sterilized. Applications are available at either veterinary clinic in Pocahontas. YOU MUST INCLUDE PROOF OF INCOME with the application! ****** What is animal welfare? Animal welfare means how an animal is coping with the conditions in which it lives. An animal is in a good state of welfare if (as indicated by scientific evidence) it is healthy, comfortable, well-nourished, safe, able to express innate behavior, and if it is not suffering from unpleasant states such as pain, fear, and distress. Good animal welfare requires disease prevention and veterinary treatment, appropriate shelter, management, nutrition, humane handling, and humane slaughter. Animal welfare refers to the state of the animal; the treatment that an animal receives is covered by other terms such as animal care, animal husbandry, and humane treatment. Protecting an animal’s welfare means providing for its physical and mental needs. Ensuring animal welfare is a human responsibility that includes consideration for all aspects of animal well-being, including proper housing, management, nutrition, disease prevention and treatment, responsible care, humane handling, and,

If someone said that to us, we’d question their sanity. But a waitress in 1930 would understand perfectly: a hobo was ordering two fried eggs on toast.

Around the Kitchen Table with Nanny
Fall. What a beautiful time of the year. It is my favorite time. I was noticing the leaves today, changing colors. Some of them are beginning to fall and I was thinking of the end of summer. This in turn made me think of the circle of life. In the spring the leaves come on as tiny buds and begin to grow and soon become leaves. They give us much needed shade from the hot sun. But when their life is over, they begin to wither and start tto fall. But we know come spring, the trees will again put on the tiny buds, and it all begins again. Makes me think of our ancestors. Each generation of our families pass down so many traditions to the younger generations. We pass down so many things including recipes. It’s so fun to look back at the ways our mothers and grandmothers did things. The special foods they cooked for holidays. Thanksgiving is just around the corner and here we are cooking almost identical foods, just making a few changes of our own and these will, of course, be passed down to our children and served to their families. Thought I would pass along some of the traditions of our family. Here are some sides that always appear on our table each year.
