As I was leaving town on Saturday, I could see the phone lines moving. Word was given to some, and others would hear it soon; Preacher Pat had another bout with the bad luck. Let me back up and start at the beginning…then you will know why I have now dubbed myself Bad Luck Betty. A few months ago, a dream got dashed. To say the least I was left broken-hearted. But all things in God’s time. I tried to help God along, but He said, “wait a minute. I know this is important to you, but it will come in time.” We must realize that those words from God are the most loving thing He can guide us through. So, in His time is okay with me. But because I was so heavily invested in this dream when it didn’t come true, I was left with a bad case of anxiety. I talked it through with some friends and some mentors of mine and then I accepted the fact that I needed to go to the doctor to help me get back in balance. I’m okay with that. I always tell people don’t be afraid to ask for a little help. But that little episode seemed to kick off the bad luck. My car, which I loved dearly, decided to first catch on fire at the gas station and then the next week just gave up the ghost and died all together. So, I was left driving my dad’s farm truck. Yes, the one with no air condition and it was a stick shift.
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer mainly occurs in middle-aged or older women. In fact, the median age at the time of a breast cancer diagnosis is 62.
This week’s literary effort is an old man’s nostalgic ramblings. My age, philosophical cast of mind, and rural Randolph County roots suit me to the task.
We got some really green bananas Saturday. I like to have one with my coffee every morning so we read to put one in a brown paper bag overnight to ripen. That is false. The next night Mike had the idea to put it in a warm place overnight so he placed it in the microwave (off) until yesterday. Still green. He then decided to ripen it outside all day in the sun then in the mud room until morning. It worked! We have discovered how to ripen a banana and that we really need a hobby... ****** I was showing a 6000 square foot home to a couple with a baby. We were going from room to room and they were taking turns carrying the bulky baby carrier all while the little boy slept peacefully. We walked into the kitchen and went over what appliances the owner was planning on leaving and discussed the seller property disclosure. The husband nodded in approval, looked at his wife and said “Where’s our kid?” Everyone looked at each other with the “I thought you had him” look. We found him in the office 3 rooms away still snoozing. Just for the record, it was not my day to keep up with him. ****** Mike and I were watching tv when a car commercial came on. He said that they have ran out of names for new cars. Said they have used all the good words and cool animal names. We were making up some like the Chevrolet Universe and the Ford Copperhead. We thought about the Dodge Hot Flash. Big problem with that one is, it only runs half the time and when it does, it overheats. ****** I remember growing up eating squirrel, rabbit and turkey, biting into something hard and not knowing if it was shot or my filling came out. Good times.
Looking back...10 years ago Water levels on Baltz Lake have dropped considerably the past few days, as the cast iron lid to the emergency overflow drain either broke off or was stolen sometime over the weekend. Before a temporary cover could be put on the drain, the water level dropped four to five feet.
“Sometimes the things in our heads are far worse than anything they could put in books or on film.”- C.K. Webb Created by Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story) and Ian Brennan (Glee, go figure), Netflix’s latest smash hit, “Dahmer-Monster: the Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” is an unbelievably problematic, captivating yet disturbing, entertaining series that propositions a small glimpse of the serial killer’s awareness and feelings.
