BRTC Career Coaches Visit Conference

BRTC’s Career Coaches and Career Coach Supervisor recently attended the annual Career Coach Conference in Little Rock, hosted by the Arkansas Department of Education Division of Career and Technical Education. The purpose of this annual conference is to keep Career Coaches and other stakeholders up-to-date on the latest trends, learn about promising ideas, and network with other coaches as they constantly work to increase the odds of success for the students of the schools in which they’re attached.

Speaking French

Social media was all fired up last week when Pocahontas cosmetologist Mistina Hibbard published a Facebook post regarding a man pretending to be a famous hairstylist. The man, who we have learned to be a retired Poplar Bluff police officer, has become wellknown throughout the local cosmetology world.

Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love

Since my baby left me… Branson, Missouri performer, Dean Z, was one of the many performers at the James Ranch during the Arkansas Elvis Festival. Dean Z travels internationally to entertain Elvis fans. The Arkansas Elvis Festival was held July 21-23 with hundreds of attendees from 15 states.

Around the Kitchen Table with Nanny

Hot! Hot! Hot! How else can you describe this summer day other than a day to stay inside under the air conditioning. It’s a good afternoon for a nap and I already had a nice one. We went to church Sunday had great fellowship with a lot of good friends. We caught up with everyone, enjoyed a good discussion in Sunday School, sang some beautiful hymns and to top everything off had a wonderful sermon from our Pastor, Pat Bodenhammer. I love Sundays! Now time to concentrate on this week’s column and try to come up with a few summer recipes. It’s too hot to cook and too hot to eat but hey with the garden fare coming in we just have to enjoy all the goodness.

Looking Back… The Incorporation of Pocahontas in 1857

SECTION 9: Be it further enacted, That the said mayor and town council shall have full, ample and complete power, by action of common council, from time to time, to levy a tax on all property, both real and personal, within the limits of said town, subject to taxation, for defraying the expenditures of said corporation, in making improvements in said town, and in carrying out and enforcing the powers to said corporation granted by this act; Provided, that all property shall be taxed ad valorem, and said tax shall not exceed one-fourth of 1 per centum per annum.

Junior High Orientation Night

Pocahontas Public Schools will conduct student orientation sessions for students in grades 7-9. At these sessions, students will be given updated class schedules, supply lists, Google Classroom links and check out Chromebooks for the upcoming school year.

Arkansas State Fiddle and Banjo Championships

The Arkansas State Fiddle and Banjo Championships return to the Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View on Saturday, August 6. The event features two state championships in one day – banjo players will compete in the morning and fiddle players will compete in the afternoon. A double-header evening concert will feature performances by The Ozark Highballers and Fiddlin’ Banjo Billy Matthews & the Old Time Players from 7 to 9 p.m.
