Hunting until recent decades was very much a part of our rural Randolph County lifestyle. When fall came that part of subsistence living began.
Jean Pearcy has gotten herself into a mess and I don’t think she can ever get herself out of it. A few weeks ago, thinking she was doing a one-time good deed, she gifted me a bag of red hots from the 131-year-old Schimpff’s Confectionery in Jeffersonville, Indiana. They were so good that I bragged on them over and over, hoping she would take the hint. Hint was taken. Last Friday, Jean came by the office to pick up a paper and my friend had a bag of red hots and as a bonus, a bag of chocolates. I’ve been eating red hots for days.
Cavenar Fields Softball Complex in East Pocahontas is currently undergoing renovations in preparation for the upcoming season and softball association president Jim Chitty says he longs for the good old days, when neighbors gathered from all parts of the community to help.
The over 100 friends and neighbors joined together, August 3, at Water Valley Machine Shop to show support for the newly formed Water Valley Volunteer Fire Department. A spokesman from the Arkansas Forestry Commission, Robert Summerville, discussed the importance of a rural fire department and first responders in a community.
The Bank of Pocahontas will be moving into its new facility in a few months and a familiar fixture will be moving with the bank – the clock that has hung on the corner of the building since 1949. The clock was removed from its frame last week and many passersby called the bank inquiring about the future plans for the clock.
Students enrolled in Mass Communications in Modern Society at Black River Technical College were happy to have former Star Herald editor Ann B. Carroll address the class recently. The class taught by English instructor Jan Tyler had the opportunity to hear accounts of the revolution of printing and historical prints in Randolph County.

City of Pocahontas Parks and Recs employees and community volunteers have been “knocking it out of the park” in the past few months with their many community events and activities. Playing with Attitudes Softball Tournament will be held on May 14 at the softball fields at the Pocahontas Sports Complex in East Pocahontas.
