From the Farmer’s Market…

Spring has sprung, and many seedlings have too! After months of frozen or canned vegetables, and vegetables trucked in to the grocery store, it sure tastes great to eat something picked just hours ago (or even minutes!) from the garden. Some of us planted garlic back in November, and eagerly watch for garlic scapes to harvest.

Cemetery Meeting

The Stubblefield Cemetery Association will meet May 14th at 9:00 a.m. In case of rain, the meeting will be held at the at the Dalton Fire Station. Donations are needed. Make checks payable to Stubblefield Cemetery, C/O Treasurer Diane Chester Huett, 516 Chester Road, Pocahontas, AR 72455.

Modern Woodmen presents donations

Modern Woodmen rep Jacob Callahan and daughter, Marley, Representative Jacob Callahan and member Marley Callahan present a $1250 matching fund check to Kristina Townsend for recently delivered prizes donated by Modern Woodmen for the Randolph County Humane Society. Maynard High School’s Project Graduation. Accepting the prizes are Emily Prater and senior Amanda Nelson.

What’s Cooking by Valerie Paterson

Such a beautiful day! Spring is really here. My beautiful azaleas are blooming in scarlet and purple. I haven’t seen any hummingbirds but they must be here as the sugar water in their feeder is getting low. There is an excellent article in the latest AARP magazine “Eating Well, Living Well” that give a lot of information on eating foods that will help us live longer.

Around the Kitchen Table with Nanny

What a beautiful Mother’s Day on Sunday! We enjoyed having our daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter with us this weekend. It is always fun to have them here. We had such a pleasant time together. I hope all of you mothers enjoyed your special day. For you working moms I thought maybe some easy casserole dishes that might make your life a little easier. Casseroles are something you can make the night before and pop in the oven when you get home from work. Just add a salad and you have a meal on the table in no time. I hope they will be helpful for you.

Fran Black

Fran Black, 75, of Corning passed away May 8, 2022 at home. Frances Suzanne Zepecki was born April 28, 1947 at Scott Field, IL. She worked as a Physical Therapist at Shriner’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Later, she worked tirelessly as a wife, mother and grandmother. Those were the greatest joys in her life. She was a frequent substitute teacher at Corning High School. She also served as interim CHS Spanish class teacher and Band Director. Mrs. Black was a Pee Wee Basketball Coach and Minor League Coach for many years in Corning. She later served as the Principal of St. Mary’s Catholic School in Paragould. She was a member of St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Church in Corning where she took on roles such as playing the organ, cleaning the church, bookkeeping, and serving as Rite of Catholic Initiation of Adults Director.

Earl Lawrence Hill

Earl Lawrence Hill, 97, passed away peacefully at the Randolph County Nursing Home in Pocahontas, AR on Saturday, May 7, 2022. Earl, a lifelong resident of Ripley County, MO and Randolph County, AR was born March 15, 1925, on the family farm near Burr, MO, to Arthur and Pearl Billips Hill.
