Vegas Royalty, Baby! Justin Dejournett and Jessica Baltz were crowned Prom King and Queen at Pocahontas High School’s Vegas themed prom on Saturday, April 25. The prom, under the direction of Sandra Bryant, was held at BRTC. For more prom pictures, see our prom special on page 6.
The 150th Celebration of the Old Randolph County Courthouse will be on May 20-21 around the historic court square in Pocahontas. Completed in 1872, the building is amongst the oldest courthouses in the state.

The Eddie Mae Herron Center hosted its annual Pie Auction and Candidate Speaking fundraiser activity on Thursday, April 21 with over $7,000 being raised for the center. Over 50 homemade pies were donated by area citizens and businesses to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, with some pies exceeding $300.

A little friendly competition and outdoor relaxation was exactly what many individuals, families, and friends came to enjoy this past Saturday, April 23, at the 1st Annual Youth Fishing Tournament! All of which took place on the pristine waters of Baltz Lake, located along Highway 67 in Pocahontas. United BASS Anglers team member, Danny Barr, launched the event, with the mission, “to create a credible and honorable tournament trail, to improve our environment by uniting and amplifying the voices of anglers and to secure a future for our youth.” The BASS Anglers also donated the prize packages presented to the winners in each category.

Maynard Sr. Amanda Nelson recently signed to play Basketball at Williams Baptist University. She is pictured with her family and Coach Kayla Tyus of WBU and Coach David Byers of Maynard. Amanda plays the guard position and is a 3 time All-Confernce and 1 time All-Regional player. She helped the Lady Tigers to a 20 win season this year.

The Randolph County Election Commission met in a special session on Wednesday, April 20, to discuss the recently proposed Pocahontas School District’s new school board representation zones. With several in attendance, the election commission suggested a meeting between the commission, the demographers, school board members and concerned citizens be held before any proposal is accepted.

Beat Nut Hill continued… The Pocahontas Redskins opened their 1965 football season under new head coach, John Cover. The ‘Skins had not been phenomenally successful on the football field for some time.
